i would say the most important thing is watching how the names flow on rather than their length. eg, avoid a silent 'e' at the end of a name when the last name starts with a vowel or 'h'.
and dont match letters at the end of the first name with the start of the last name, eg Kayla Andersen. tends to run on and she becomes 'kaylaaaandersen'
if youre looking for unique names, search baby name sites for popular names, but go to the bottom of the list, aroung 100-200. these produce great names that are more unique but people should still know how to pronounce and spell.
good luck with everything

What you mentioned about the naming rule is a great guideline for getting a name to sounds just right. Also a 2 sylable last name should have a 2 sylable first name.
Girls:
Anjali
Harlee
Sabra
Aria
Melaina
Samara
Zaria
Lorelei
Boy:
Presley
Ashton
Declan
Kai
Zander

I think you are right to want unique names that will prevent them from getting teased! We want our children to stand out, but we also want them to fit in!
For that reason, I would recommend names that are in the top 200 (not too weird) but not in the top 50. That will make them not too common.
Of those names, here are the ones I love!
#53 Connor for a boy
# 54 Hunter for a boy and Zoe for a girl
# 56 Diego for a boy
#57 Maya for a girl
#58 Owen for a boy
#63 Adrian for a boy and Trinity for a girl
# 68 Audrey for a girl
# 69 Nathaniel for a boy (nickname Nate)
# 73 Jocelyn for a girl
# 75 Carter for a boy
# 76 Sebastian for a boy or Paige for a girl
# 78 Xavier for a boy
#79 Vanessa for a girl (nickname Nessa)

take a look at
http://www.doodlebugdezigns.com
in their link's section they have several links to baby naming services.
one thing that i've noticed is that many folks are now using common last names as their childs first name ~ fuller, carter, regan, etc. as a general rule i'd agree if you have a long last name have a short first name, just my opinion though

i don't think you have to follow any rules when naming your child. my daughters' names are not unique, desiree & devon, but they're not overly used either.
if you want unique but not hard to spell or tease-worthy, try checking out a book of baby names from other countries. i didn't use a baby book but my firstborn's name is french and the baby's name is japanese.
japanese girl's name are really nice. like tamiko, yuri(unisex), devon(unisex), komiko
russian girl's names are cool too. natalya, milla, petra
i'm not much help with boys names. however, i have a friend who has a son. since her son was going to have her husband's last name, she used her maiden name as her son's first name. her maiden name is "malloy", but she redid the spelling & named him " m'loye ". crafty
good luck

There are some real dork-butts out there that voted me down. She said unique, not weird-***. Also said short, not three syllables and difficult spellings. I don't see here anything that's worse than anybody else's stab at this, dork-butts.
