A visual and symbolic represetation of an area:
Examples: your average road map, a brain scan, a contour map or a 3D photographic map.
A process for saving an entire image is called a bit map because the proces maps the bits of data. When you create a computer model you map the surface to represent it; this process is called rendering and takes a huge amount of time. It is how movies like Transformers and Toy Story were done.
Your standard map is a terrian model with symbols for height, folage, roads, buildings etc.
According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map
"A map is a visual representation of an area—a symbolic depiction highlighting relationships between elements of that space such as objects, regions, and themes.
Many maps are static two-dimensional, geometrically accurate representations of three-dimensional space, while others are dynamic or interactive, even three-dimensional. Although most commonly used to depict geography, maps may represent any space, real or imagined, without regard to context or scale; e.g. Brain mapping, DNA mapping, and extra-terrestrial mapping."
