The greatest songwriter of all time in my opinion is : Lennon and McCartney. Both were not as good without the other (in my opinion). When you listen to their entire repertoire of songs you realise just how excellent they were. They were "one". One beautiful song after another !

I also think that Stevie Wonder and Prince are great song writers. Maybe not the best, but great just the same.

Bob Dylan would have to be right up there.
As would John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
But don't forget the classical world's Franz Schubert - he died aged only 31 having written more than 600 songs - all wonderful. It was Schubert who really enabled a 'song' to be a true artistic statement. He'd have to come at the top of any songwriter list.

Hi Messiah.

That is a hard question, but I'll give it a go.

Syd Barrett/David Gilmore of Pink Floyd
Lennon/McCartney with & w/o The Beatles
Neil Young with & w/o Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Janis Joplin - the 1st real female rocker

There are so many to choose from; but these guys & gal first came to mind. I don't think it's possible to pick just one. If I think about this any longer, the list will be a page long. So, I think I'll just go play some music.

Peace.

I don't know about songwriter, but Danny Elfman is an amazing composer of music if your looking for current. If I had to choose a songwriter/singer it would have to be Jim Morrison. Maynard from Tool is killer as well.

Matter of opinion really. Most people would have Lennon/McCartney or Bob Dylan somewhere around the top though.

For me Ryan Ross from Panic! at the Disco, the songs are profound and sarcastic at the same time, and it's kinda hard to understand 'em but that's why they're great because none of that songs say always the same things like:'i love you','let me go', 'i wanna forget you' n' crap like that.

Neil Young, hands down.

Listen to 'Expecting to Fly', 'A Man Needs a Maid', 'Like a Hurricane', 'Sugar Mountain'...basically anything he put out (excluding some of his experimental 80s stuff that was just...crap...)
