If they were mothers, it was considered a real shame. Hence, the creation soon after of Aid to Dependent Children, also called, "Widow's pensions". The idea that a civilized society would force poor women to leave their own children all day to go to work was abhorrent. Now, however, we have "progress" and think it's wonderful for women to leave their children all day in order to go to work.

If they were poor, nobody really cared if they worked or not. However, if they came from wealthier families, it was often considered a disgrace if they worked, especially if they had children. It made their husbands look really bad because they was seen as failures who couldn't earn enough to provide for their families.
