How do you define "best" ? Performance? Support? Reliability?

Sadly, those things are subject to personal opinion and at times, luck.

It's because in reality, brand names (Such as Dell or even Alienware) do not help performance on their hardware that is inside that computer. Not to mention they are also more expensive than buying the computer parts piece by piece.

So my suggestion is actually buying your own PC hard piece by piece and assemble them. Mostly likely you will speed less overall than buying a prepackaged PC.

Although if you do not have any experience in building your own PC, then you may have no choice except try to find a friend who is knowledgable about those things. I mean assembling PCs.

Try the openSource Dell Computer-uses Linux Ubuntu, includes Microsoft Office-like(and compatible) office suite, as well as tons of software, and better looks than Windows. Also it is MUCH cheaper because the hardware is Dell and the Software is all Free! and if you really want fun-buy one and as soon as you get it, replace Ubuntu with Ubuntu Ultimate: www.ubuntusoftware.info-Like free Windows Vista Ultimate and then Some!! No viruses for Linux, has the best security of all, not to mention top of the line looks and software!

Dell is good. You can customize it on-line.
If you're comfortable in a store, go to Circuit City and get a HP.
