Word does way more things. Word has desktop publishing capabilities Works is limited to what you can do. Word is much more than a word processor. Word can be integrated with all of the other Office components such as Powerpoint Excel and even Access.

MS works is a basic word processor without all the bells and whistles that a full function professional level software package needs. Works is probably sufficient for most home or pre-university level students needs.
MS Word is a full function professional level product that would be used in an office/business environment or perhaps by a college student.
If you are looking for a full function word processor without paying the large dollars that Word costs, then take a look at Open Office which is a free download from http://download.openoffice.org/

Microsoft works is different and i think worse than microsoft office which gives you MS word, MS Access and so on. If you want to take files from microsoft works nd put them on a computer that has word and not works, you must change the file name. I wouldnt say they are an improvement, there just the standard as you have to buy MS offic seperately or include it in the price

The all-time best word processor is still Word Perfect. Unfortunately, Microsoft managed to run it out by requiring Word to interface with their other programs. It's a shame, cause that was one great program.

The best is open office from www.openoffice.org. It's free, it makes PDFs, It saves in .doc for Word, .xls for Excel, and ppt for power point if you specify that you want it to.

Of course you could just switch your hole system to free software and no viruses ever will plague you again. Just get Linux.
