OK, you have the non-believers view, now for the believer...
Kolob, it is believed, is near our galactic center. For a great book on this subject, read "Earth in the Beginning" by Dr. Eric Skousen. It's available from deseret.
Kolob is indeed the celestialized world on which God the father went through his second estate.

Al:
Very succcint, but a good intro. Start watching Ancient Aliens and many will get an eye opener into the reality of our "gods" and reigions.
Geoff:
Of course it is "unknown" to scientists as Kolob is, as are all names, a label. If the label chosen in the scriptures was Kolob and an approximate loation given, that does not mean it is not known. It has probably been categorized as a different name. No more than calling Germany, Deutschland. Different names, same place. But to say Deutschland does not exist in America because it is unknwn to us, is not good logic.
Raymond:
In Battlestar Galactica, it is Kobol, not Kolob. And you have the order reversed. BG based their cosmology on LDS cosmology as there are many Scientists and SciFi writers who favor a cosmology of "gods" who are advanced beings. So yes, it is Sci Fi (and damn good actually), but one based on theories held by many and faith held by some.

Kolob is a fictitious planet, created by those who think that their god needs an actual place to sit on a throne. The creation is rather recent (1835?).
Another interpretation is that Kolob would be the star around which the planet described above would orbit.
Some place it at the centre of our Galaxy. However, modern scientific evidence places a black hole at that location.
The idea that the throne of god is at the centre of the Galaxy, was used in a Star Trek movie, where they find the planet, only to find that the "god" there is a fake.
Even Battlestar Galactica uses the name for a planet (not connected with the centre of the Galaxy). In Battlestar galactica, it is the name of the planet on which humanity began and from which it moved to the 12 "colonies" (evoking the 12 tribes of Israel). In the story, Earth would be the 13th, forgotten colony.
Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek are works of fiction, of course.
