The atom is smaller, in fact, it is the simplest form of matter is the atom itself. Atoms (perhaps tens of them bonded together) are what make up "macromolecules" like carbohydrates and proteins.

Macro- indicates an especially large one with dozens, maybe thousands of atoms. An example would be a biological protein or a strand of DNA.
