Not Vista, Not Apple(both are Microcrap!)
Try the openSource Dell Computer-uses Linux Ubuntu, includes Microsoft Office-like(and compatible) office suite, as well as tons of software, and better looks than Windows. Also it is MUCH cheaper because the hardware is Dell and the Software is all Free! and if you really want fun-buy one and as soon as you get it, replace Ubuntu with Ubuntu Ultimate: www.ubuntusoftware.info-Like free Windows Vista Ultimate and then Some!! No viruses for Linux, has the best security of all, not to mention top of the line looks and software!

You can get a good one if you want to spend that much.
First, figure out exactly what you intend to do with your laptop, how large a hard drive you need, how much RAM, then go to Amazon or bizrate for a list of sellers so you can compare.
I have Dell and HP equipment. Both are good and both offer good support.
Whatever you do, you do want good support. It is as important as the price.

there is no "best brand" of laptop...
every laptop works as good as the other as long as they are taken care of properly.
you can get a good laptop from anywhere in a range of 500-1000 and a high performance laptop from 1001+
(the best laptop that i saw was $3300)

I would go with HP. They have some of the best at a reasonable price and great customer support.

Off off the top of my head I would choose Apple. That is what Consumer reports consistently rates highest. Great Support to. I love mine.

I was just going to agree with thehumbleone but I fee obligated to repeat the warranty is every bit as much important as the purchase price.
Get the best warranty you can, and make sure it covers physical damage.
