I got another computer, took the HD out of my old unit and put it in an external USB shell. If the old computer was not fairly new, the drive will not be interchangable with the new one due to type of interface. Additionally you will void the warranty of the new system if you open it.

You will not void the warranty of a laptop if you change the drive, or add memory, etc. Unless you damage the system doing so.

While trying to get an older PATA drive into a newer SATA system just is not going to work, possibly more of a problem would be that the OS on the old drive has all the drivers for the old system. It is not going to work well, if at all, on a different system. None of the low level drivers that get set up on an OS install are going to be correct.

Laptop screens are expensive, so if you are want to upgrade to a nice new system, this sounds like a good reason. Get an external drive enclosure that will fit the size and interface of the old drive and transfer your data files that way.
