I'm at a university and I am very dependent on wireless internet for the most part. I have a 7 month old HP Pavillion dv6000 and for the past 6 1/2 months, the wireless internet has worked fine and then suddenly for the past couple weeks or so, I am unable to get any signal. My wireless card is in, my wireless "assistant" is on and yet I am unable to obtain any networks while other people in the same room (most with older laptops) are able to get a signal. What do you think the problem is?

Ok there are a few things you need to check...

1) On some laptops, there is a switch in order to flip on the wireless card, make sure that if you have one, that it is on.

2) Make sure that you can get a signal from other locations. Try by hotels or go to a friends house to see if you can receive a signal.

3) Be sure that you have the required setup for your campus. I know that on my campus, we have to do many things in order to connect. Ask your network administrator to be sure that you have the settings correct.

--If none of that fixes the problem, chances are that your wireless card is bad and/or damaged. You will have to get a new one and you can get one from walmart or any computer store for under 40 bucks.

Usuallly when the user's increase in particular spots the signal drop, this is normal, you have to try to other location.
You can also repair the connection by Right click the network neighborhood then select repair, this will give you fresh segment of IP, DNS, WINS, etc.

Your wireless adapter card may have died. Can you beg or borrow a wireless USB adapter and try that?

Is your card showing a wireless signal but no data transfer is taking place?

Maybe the network is encrypted.

(Best guesses first, unlikeliest last)
