I am an American who just went there this past May(my dream vacation). I loved it. The underground was easy to navigate and I didn't have any problems with muggers or anything like that. You have to see a show in the West End. You can either buy your ticket early online or there is a shop there that sells tickets for 50% off.
I will warn you to be careful though. I was walking through Victoria Station, slipped in a puddle of water and dislocated my knee.
While I highly recommend travel insurance, just know that emergency care in England is free (just in case).

I believe in the Dr. Johnson maxim 'whoever tires of London tires of life' . True the daylight hours are shorter but the darker evenings make a visit to the plethora of entertainment venues so much more enticing! And that really needn't cost the earth! There are plenty of places where you can buy cutprice tickets for excellent shows and other events. Not to mention open air skating and going to watch Arsenal :)! Good range of museums; the British Museum has an excellent exhibition of the Terracotta Warriors from Xi'an China - not to be missed! As a 'bonus' I've added a link to somewhere to stay which might (just might!) make it the first of many trips to the gratest capital city in the world!

I lived in London while working on my Graduate Degree about a year ago. London, especially in the winter (January) is wonderful because the streets are yours. There are no tourists to wait in long lines with, or to crowd up the museums, just the locals. New Years is especially a fun time to be in London. I love the mix of culture--you have to try the Indian food, a great place is Khyber Pass by the South Kensington tube stop--simply delicious. There is also great Lebanese, Chinese, and Italian food, but stay away from "Mexican" food, it is just awful. Don't forget to catch a show---but beware of fake ticket sellers--just go to the box office it is the safest and assured way to get and keep your tickets.
Enjoy your trip. Wish I could accompany you!!! I miss London and I am always looking for ways to get back there to live.

London in January is great! You have the sales for a start! Harrods, Liberty, etc. Not so many tourists so less queing.
Musts include the Tower of London - read up on it first - its got an amazing history dating back to Norman times. Use the Half Price Ticket Booth in Leicester Square to get some bargain tickets - but make sure it is the official one (wooden hut at one side of the square) or you could get ripped off.
London markets are also great fun - but hang on to your wallets!
There is so much to do. Whenever you come you will enjoy - but bring warm clothing and waterproofs.

London is a great place to visit. Yes, the winter days are short, and can be damp and gloomy, but if you want to see the galleries and museums it is an ideal time to beat the tourists. January is a good time to go shopping because of the New Year sales.

I have lived all over the world and have lived in London for the past 15 years. I can honestly say it is the most exciting, cosmopolitan and culturally diverse city. There is always something to do, with excellent culture, a great night life, wonderful international cuisine and a truly remarkable city. Unfortunately, London is also one of the most expensive cities in the world. At present, we have the most expensive transport network and the pound is strong against the dollar.
January is also one of the coldest months to visit too. Usually, temperatures are low and the weather is awful. But please don't let that dissuade you.

Yes, but January is not the best time. It's rainy and the days are very SHORT! I've always gone in summer, but have been told that October is a good time to visit. Not too hot, not too cold and not as much rain. If you are interested in history the walking tours are great. If you like theater there's plenty available. Also museums, shopping. Go by your local bookstore and check the travel section. There are several excellent guides available.

London loves Tourists But :-
Don't believe the press
London is overrated. In January it will be cold, wet, and windy assuming the snow has melted.
It's dark at about 5pm and all year round it's expensive.
Although I live less than 20 miles from the city centre I never go there.
I forgot to mention the very expensive local transport and the loony major.

You don't visit London (capital L) for sunshine so January (capital J) will be fine.
I wouldn't want to live there but there is plenty to see and do for a week or so: Imperial War Museum, all the art galleries, west end shows, Houses of Parliament, Buck Palace, Highgate Cemetery, Soho, V & A, Harrod's........so much.
