Symbolism is something that represents something else. Something that is related, but not necessarily the meaning and occasionally for the simple ones (like heart symbolizes love), it is the things that first come to your head.
Like heart symbolizes love.
Red rose= love
yellow rose= friendship
devil= hell
bible= christianity
etc... To explain this little more think about for example the bible. What do you first thing or relate to the bible? Christians... christianity. The same when you see a heart. For example when someone writes or says I <3(heart) you. That stands for I love you.
Or a good example is in the book Lord of the Flies if you have ever read it.
Ralph finds the conch and the conch symbolizes power. Even though it is a material thing it can still symbolize power becuase when he blows it, an assembly forms, and the one holding the conch at the specific moment has the right to speak.

watch the first few minutes of the Divinci Code where Tom Hanks character is giving a lecture on it. For that matter, the whole movie is about symbolism.
