I just got a used CDRW and it didn't come with any cables or software. It's in my computer and working, but when I put in a blank CD and try to burn a CD, it says insert a blank CD. It can read a regular CD perfectly though. Does it need a driver or did I do something wrong?

Ok... there could be a few reasons for this to happen. Lets not jump to hardware problems right away.

1) Your operating system makes a big difference. Only Windows XP and Windows Vista have built in support for writable drives. So if your OS is Windows 2000 or older, the computer only knows that the drive is a CD Reader, not a writer. If you have XP or Vista, sometimes the support for writing is less than stellar. You really want a good software for CD burning like Nero. You can download a demo version of Nero at http://www.nero.com. The trial works for like 30 days and it isn't that expensive to register the software and obtain a legitimate license. Once you have good CD burning software, you should be in good shape.

2) If there is something wrong with the drive itself, usually the drive will not do anything. Will the drive read a CD that is already burned? Like an application or game?

3) Being that the drive is regognized by windows, you are most of the way there. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me directly... ptak2000@Yahoo.com

You can try two things. Use a brush cd/dvd lens cleaner and down load the drivers from the cd-rw manufacturers web site and then try to burn On the very early cd burners only the cd was atapi ide and the burner function was driver enhanced.(compaq and ibm used them) If it doesnt work then ,its a bad drive and needs to be replaced.

The drivers are native, aka no drivers needed, sounds like the CD laser is gone, time for a new one.
