Absolutely Highway 1. I have made that drive so many times. But....depending on when you plan to take that route, watch for the Pumpkin Festival stuff going on in Half Moon Bay. Both 92 and Hwy 1 will get jammed.

Its about 1 hour on to coast between the two cities. Going the highway makes no sense. You would have to take 17 to 280, then 280 to 92. You are looking at 90 minutes with no traffic.

The coast is much more beautiful and takes about 45 min from SC. By highway do you mean 17? You wouldn't take 17 to get to Half Moon bay anyway as 17 is inland. As far as I know, the coast (HWY 1) is the ONLY way to get to Half Moon Bay (coming from Santa Cruz, that is).

I'd definitely take Highway 1 (the coast route). It would take about 45 minutes with no traffic.

It's a lovely ride.

Also, if you take an inland route you're going to wind up going all the way to San Jose, then up 280 and back across the mountains. A waste of time.

I have driven the entire pacific coast highway, and let me tell ya. Any leg of that road takes a bit longer. IF you are just wanting to drive then take interstate five. IF you want to see the most beautiful things in this great country, drive the coastal highway. Just be aware of the landslides. Those can close the road, and you could end up going hours up the road, and have to turn around and go back to the interstate.. I hope this was helpful...
