The woman to whom you're referring is Mary Alice. Her suicide was the big mystery during season one. Basically what happened was that years and years before, she and her husband Paul bought a baby boy from a drug addict (who it turned out was Mike's girlfriend). A few years later, the mother changed her mind and tried to get her baby back, and when Mary Alice and Paul refused, she threatened to go to the police and tried to force her way up the stairs to get the baby. To prevent her from doing so, Mary Alice grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed her, killing her. Paul took the body and stuffed it in baby Zach's toychest and buried her in the yard. After Mary Alice's suicide, Paul dug up the toychest and threw it in the river, where it was recovered. Somehow, I don't remember, one of the neighbors found out about what Mary Alice did and started blackmailing her, and that's when she killed herself. Paul got his revenge though and killed the blackmailer.

Are you talking about the voice over lady? Becasue I think her name is Mary Alice or something.
I just remember in one episode Lynette was having flashbacks of that day and i think she killed herself becasue she was unhappy.

My first instinct was to tell you all, but by rereading your question I think it would be much more fun for you to watch the reruns/dvds to find out exactly why Mary Alice got a handgun and did the nasty deed.

On a sunny day, in the heart of America, the loveliest of suburbs, housewife Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong) killed herself. Now she takes us into the lives of her friends, family and neighbors... Her circle of girlfriends on Wisteria Lane includes Bree Hodge (Marcia Cross), Martha Stewart on steroids, who recently battled the demons of widowhood, alcoholism and vengeful children...she remarried and now tries to keep her image of perfection even as everything crumbles around her; Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), who struggles with balancing the complications of work, family issues and now cancer; Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher), until recently a divorcee and single mom, finally got her happy ending when she tied the knot with the hot plumber next door but is now faced with the challenges of a blended family; newlywed Gabrielle Marquez, the ex-model who seems to be unlucky in love; and serial divorcee Edie Britt (Nicollette Sheridan), the free spirited real estate maven whose love life has everyone buzzing.
Then there are the men: Mike Delfino (James Denton), a plumber who is the on-again/off- again love of Susan's life; Lynette's adorable husband, Tom (Doug Savant), who, it's turning out, has his own share of secrets, Gabrielle's ex-husband, Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira), Mary Alice’s widowed husband, Paul (Mark Moses), who is in prison for the murder of a neighbor, Bree's husband, Orson Hodge (Kyle MacLachlan) who ran Mike over and put him in a coma. Joining the neighborhood is Katherine Mayfair (Dana Delany), who years ago lived on Wisteria Lane, who moves into Mike's old house with her new young gynecologist husband and two kids in their late teens.
From her unique vantage point, Mary Alice sees more now than she ever did alive, and she’s planning to share all the delicious secrets that hide behind every neighbor’s closed door in this seemingly perfect American suburb.
