I read very little mention of some of my favorite bands, like Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis, Supertramp, etc. I feel this music is timeless and would have a lot more success with more exposure. Doesn't anyone remember the good old days when music had substance?

Pink Floyd was only ever the tiniest bit prog, and certainly not enough to consider them a progressive band. As for insinuating that music has somehow lost "substance," we still have math rock, post-rock, baroque pop, and tons of others. Nostalgia is a circular trap.

EDIT: Instead of getting incredulous and expecting that to serve in place of an argument, why not offer some counter-arguments?

I'm shocked by 2 things here
1) There are alot of progheads wandering around here.... or at least I think that cause almost all my contacts are progheads
2) Why is there so much negativity here? We're all progheads, don't hate each other, hate MCR fans

Pink Floyd is most definetly progressive. They're my favorite band and anyone who denied that they are prog clearly has only heard the famous Floyds.
Porcupine tree is an AMAZING band, and I'm the biggest Floyd fan, and I would say Porcupine Tree is very close and is probably the best modern prog band there is today.

I'm kind of sad that music note guy is gone cause he use to supply us with endless amounts of Yes and ELP questions while I poured out the Floyd and Porcupine tree question.

Well I was rather hoping they'd all accidentally wandered into their nursing homes never to return but apparently I'm not so lucky.

And as a growing fan of Hawkwind I resent the use of the word progressive on such a marvellous protopunk band, that maybe enjoyed the occasional musical "wandering off" so to speak a little too much. But tell me the song "Quark Strangeness & Charm" or "Urban Guerilla" or "Silver Machine" is a prog song. I dare you! And any band that produces another band like Motorhead couldn't possibly be prog.

And I hope we can all take a joke here because as much as I am an avid hater of everything progressive I respect everyone's opinion and don't really wish you progheads were all dead or dying, at the moment.

Yes, we're still here. Does it get any better than "Lamb" or "Close to the Edge"?? As a matter of fact, just saw Genesis this past Saturday. Phil Collins, not Peter Gabriel, sorry to say.
::sigh::

I love it. I started a yahoo group for it ages ago, but got hardly any members and even less traffic. :(
