The height of waves depends on the shape and depth of the ocean floor. In general, the height of a wave is inversely proportional to the water depth.

In deep water the tidal waves are barely perceptible, but once they reach shallow water, the forward moving energy of the wave form is converted to wave height. In other words, the amplitude is increased and the wavelength is decreased.

Depending on the geometry of the ocean floor when the tidal wave reaches shore, wave height can easily exceed 10 meters.
