Depends on the individual.
I myself find American History boring too. I prefer European History. The reason I find it boring is it just appears to be one long explanation on how America is such a great country. When I had to take it in High School I remember by the time we got to the War of 1812 I had had it. (If I want to hear about how great America is, I'll watch FOX News).
Others are very passionate about American History (I can't imagine why). But everyone's entitled to their own personal interests. I don't judge.

MeetMe@, it is only boring if you wish it to be! Perhaps you are reading the wrong history books...
For instance, when reading about the Pilgrims, try a book such as:
Mayflower Bastard, A Stranger Among the Pilgrims, David Lindsay, Copyright 2002 by David Lindsay, Thomas Dunne Books, St. Martin’s Press, New York. Resources & books relating to Massachusetts and England.
Read about the Germanna Colony; Germans who were brought from Germany to settle on the western frontier of Virginia, to smelt iron and to be a buffer against the Germans. There are so many books that will bring the history to life.
Or, you might try some historical novels.

Boring to you maybe - some people, like me, find it very interesting and relevant to today. Maybe you just have a bad teacher, or just don't understand why history is important. You can learn a lot of lessons about why things are the way they are today by studying history - for instance, take race relations. The history of that goes back to the slave trade of the 1600s, up through the Civil War, reconstruction, the segregated military of the 1st and 2nd World Wars, the civil rights movement of the 60's up to today. You can't possibly understand why things are the way they are today without understanding how they got that way.

I find American history exciting. Most of the books I buy are history books. I know that while you are in school there are so many useless things that you have to commit to memory that it takes all the pleasure out of learning about something sometimes. I felt that way when I was in school, even though history was my favorite subject. Later on in life, you may find more interest in it since you are not having to remember a lot of things that you will probably never need to remember.

It is not our history that is boring, but the way it is taught in primary school What you learn in school is only the history that makes our country look good, it is propaganda If you are able to get unbiased information, our history reads like a suspense novel It becomes riveting when you know the good AND the bad

It is difficult for me to understand how someone would not finding history exciting.
It may be that you don’t relate on a personal level to the events and there is a way to personally relate to the past. First, build yourself a family tree. Go back as far as you can parents, grand parents, great grand parents, etc. Connect dates to them, when they were born, when they went to school, when they got married, when their children were born, those types of things. What did they do. Who did they know. What major events happened around them. Do this and history will begin to take on a personal flavor, something to which you can directly relate. History will then become interesting and exciting.

Anything can be either boring or exciting, depending on the delivery. It's boring because they're just telling you to read and do worksheets rather than interacting with the material and really getting inside of it in a way that feels satisfying and fulfilling.

You're not approaching it the right way, is my guess. I find it thrilling!
What are your specific interests? Try looking into the history of a specific topic that interests you. (For example, I am interested in the black civil rights movement, feminist history, labor history, the 1920s-1940s; those areas started me off, and now I find history generally interesting.)

Some of it is perspective. In 20 years the period of the beginning of the US-Iraqi war will be history and you will have lived it. I still have trouble thinking of the seventies as history. I can remember it when it happened.
