So, is dsl just souped up dial-up? Or is it something totally different. I want to get relatively cheap internet, but be able to share it between 3 computers. I know that I'll have to get a router and ethernet cables. But I just want to know what sets dsl apart from regular old dial-up.

DSL is always-on and provides much faster surfing, downloading and email. Especially if you are sharing between computers, I highly recommend going with DSL over dial-up. Even with improvements in dial-up speed over the past few years, there is no comparison.

Here is a great explanation of DSL --

It's a faster speed then dial-up, and as long as you get a modem or if you set the computer to work wireless, you can get a router. But DSL more then likely depending where you live will start out at basic price 29.99 per month. And the more computer you have on the network, the slower the connection will be, so you probably will want to go with a faster package, which would be like a pro, which will cost more.

Dsl is i think totaly different cause you can use the phone while on the internet and you never have to connect to anything . It is always on. I had dial up two weeks ago and it was the slowest thing in the world. Now i got att and it is like super fast compared to dail up .I recomend att . It has a couple plans. I got the basic and its fast. Att will send you everything you need from the modem to the cables to the filters. You can ask for a gateway and itl let you use it up tp 5 computers

Speed is the main thing. I have AT&T (no kidding) and i have super slow internet. The main reason is that I am 15,000 feet away from the central hub. that is like flight level for a small aircraft. So it sucks. But I was told by the AT&T people that they will be building more terminal things which are hubs around the county (Los Angeles). So yeah. check your internet service provider. In my area, it is Time Warner Cable.

Dialup is analogue, dsl is digital. Apart from greatly increased bandwidth, you gain speed as the pc speaks digital directly to the connecting server, without both ends having to translate to and from analogue to use the line.
