Do you think it's because they are so compact in size, that they register more photons than photographic plates do, that telescopes using CCDs have to be focused on the subject for shorter times or for all of these reasons?

All of the above.

Plus... they are reusable, that is, they don't have to be developed using chemicals, and stored in cabinets/lockers/vaults like negative photo plates have to be stored.
