Your question is interesting, but confusing at the same time. You asked about the secret to inner peace. But then you asked what makes people happy and what the secret to happiness is. You have presumed that happiness leads to inner peace. But I don't think they are the same thing.
Happiness is one thing. Inner peace another.
In the book - "Flow The psychology of Happiness" Mihaly Csikszentmihali says that people experience "flow." Moments" of happiness. You become absorbed in "doing" something you enjoy. You have to be an active participant. It comes when doing things like gardening, reading, painting or drawing.... you feel absorbed in what you are doing, other things fade into insignificance for a while....
He illuminates the accuracy of what philosophers have been saying for centuries: that the way to happiness lies not in mindless hedonism but in mindful challenge.
But that isn't the same as inner peace. I don't think it is anyway.

I get moments of inner peace. Standing or walking in the middle of an open field on a warm sunny day with my headphones on listening to laid-back sounds, arms outstretched and no one in sight. Enjoying really simple pleasures, like watching a sparrow taking a bath in my small waterfall by the pond. I suppose one secret to happiness is to enjoy the moment no matter how small; forget about yesterday, don't think about tomorrow. I'm not an environmentalistic anti this, pro that tree hugging activist, I just feel at peace with nature.

The secret to happiness and inner peace is to ACCEPT. Not to idealize life and your life situation but to enjoy each moment fully as it comes, knowing now that everything is exactly the way it's supposed to be right now - if it wasn't it wouldn't be. It makes perfect sense. There is no perfect moment. Now is the perfect moment. So when you can fully enjoy right now, you'll create momentum that will more often allow you to really enjoy life. Things that you wanted or felt you were missing you had an illusion of wanting more than usual because you felt you couldn't have it. That's not happiness or joy, the feeling of wanting something you're missing will always be stronger or more potent than a feeling of happiness in the moment by comparison. It's the same feeling you get when you listen to a song and it takes you away. You feel something is there so much deeper than you're used to and you're entranced by it. But truly there is nothing more to that song than the sounds you hear. The rest you're filling in for yourself. In essence, you're taking yourself away. The songs just giving you a venue for you to do that. Likewise with this, the comparison of the feelings would make you feel that "No this isnt' the feeling it's not as strong as the feeling I was desiring." The desire was illusory. The feeling of happiness in this moment, is the most you'll get and as you truly enjoy that. You'll have the inner peace and contentment in life you're looking for. Life is nothing more than a series of "now" moments. Life only exists right now. Past and future, are never here. And when they're here, they're here in the form of RIGHT NOW. So doesn't it make sense that right now would be the only time when you could ever enjoy something? I feel the same way. Accept life as it is, enjoy your emotions but realize that you make them for yourself. The feelings you feel are not really there, in essence they feel like everything but they're really not. They're chemical releases physiologically, and they're only in your body. Which is why you can love someone and yet not have that love reciprocated. It's things you're creating in your mind, for yourself, by the way you're viewing your situation. It's a frame of mind. Anything experienced too often will be numbed down. You can't always be happy or always be sad. Eventually it wears down to a normality. And that normality is your default. SO this is why contentment and inner peace is more powerful than excitedment or any other emotion you could bring up. It feels lesser by comparison, but by duration there is no match. So the more you can feel contentment and peace in this moment now, the more you'll really be enjoying life. That's the secret, to my eyes. That's the main idea, bluntly put. There are a few other things that are good to know, as though "Other's opinions are exactly that - so don't take them or let them shape you unless it's aligned with something you want for yourself." and another thing like, "Follow your dreams and never be 'Realistic' but Reality is simply an agreement between people about what is". Everyone gets their reality through their five senses. So if we only take that as what is, then we'll always be limited by everything that is out of that range of sense. A perfect example of this that I use is the dog whistle. If you take only what people agree on now that exists, then things that are clearly outside of our range wouldn't exist, even though it really does exist. You'd be a lunatic for blowing a dog whistle and saying "that makes a sound!". You'd be carted off. Of if everyone forgot english and you tried to speak it to people. Once again, you'd be off to a padded room because people don't agree that that's what is. So you can't go by what people agree on. You go by what you feel is right for you. Not only will that make you happy. But what more is there to life than being fulfilled, satisfied, and happy in it? Thus, Dream big and do things that people say can't be done. Imagine. And Enjoy. And it's all around those three ideas (1) acceptance and allowing (2) Releasing fears and worries about what other people think or guidelines set upon you, and (3) Just focusing on enjoying the moment. Living your dreams and making it your enjoyments your life's work and career. ANd just following the successes that arrive due to this immense joy you have about life. It's absolutely perfect, and anyone who lives in this way, would agree.

well,i struggle with inner peace on a daily basis, but my advice is take a step back and all the little things like food, water, conversation, your bed, getting up for work, imagine if that were all taken away from you tomorrow and you had nothing but the cold and your own hands to survive...it makes you very appreciative and i think an appreciative person is a peaceful person..and in my case it's God that makes me see these things and therefore blesses me with peace

Happiness is not a matter of good fortune or worldly possessions. It's a mental attitude. It comes from appreciating what we have, instead of being miserable about what we don't have. It's so simple - yet so hard for the human mind to comprehend.
