It's come out that he got lost and landed in this country by accident thinking it was India. It's come out that this land was ALREADY OCCUPIED and therefore cannot fit being claimed as "discovered". It's come out that he was a plunderer, thief, and his crew rapists and tyrants. He brought about the ruination of this great land and it's native people who lost everything in the onslaught of immigration from greedy, power hungry, and disease riddled European countries who sent their criminals and crazies here as punishment. So why is this "man" still being given a day of recognition?

He didn't even find America he found the West Indies (hince the name) so I agree with you why is he still celebrated? I mean Leif Ericson found this place, well Canada, first and (not included Spongebob) we don't celebrate him. I guess its because we want to preserve the good ol' america foundation that we've learnt since the 2nd grade. If it ain't broke don't fix it. We are used to it even though it could be said it is a useless "holiday" and we don't get off work/school and other than the occasionaly parade we don't really have anything big. Plus the saying "In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue" ryhmes.

As you pointed out, the native population was basically wiped out by the European invasion. Those people celebrating Christopher Columbus are not descendants of the native population.
If we began to actually celebrate the truth in this nation most of our current institutions would fall apart, our economy would be in ruins and George would be out of a job (if not in prison in a cell next to Dick's!)
This is the nation that created the world's greatest and most effective propaganda machine, called "Madison Avenue", where and with the same we sell everything even if it kills the customer as we chase the "almighty dollar".
Here, it's money that matters and you get more money by lying and carrying a briefcase than with a gun!

Welcome to the real world!

He brought civilization to the New World.

Who gives a damn if he killed some savages? They gave nothing to humanity: no technology, no artistic masterpieces, no contributions whatsoever.

God bless Christopher Columbus.
