I was taught that change the side-change the sign,so
5+7p=19
7p=19-5 move the 5 to other side becomes -5
7p=14
p=14 divided by 7
p=2.

or the other way
5+7p=19
5-19=-7p note-two terms have changed sides and sign
-14=-7p
-14 divided by 2=-7p
-2=-p changing sides and sign again
p=2

5+7p = 19
Take 5 from each side so that you are just left with a multiple of p
7p = 14
Divide each side by 7 so that you have the value of p
p = 2
