Looks like a lot of peolpe are confused about the meaning of hp per litre.

Whilst you're getting monster power from the Veyron, it's specific power output is only 125bhp per litre.

When you say "road legal" do you mean as it comes out of factory, or tuned cars that are road legal?

If you're talking factory cars, then most people think it's the Mitsubishi Evolution VII FQ-400, producing 402bhp out of it's 2 litre engine (201bhp/litre)

Mazda's Efini spec RX7's were producing 276bhp out of 1.3 litres, giving 212.3 bhp/litre.

However, it's a ropey old ford that takes the honours. The RS200 when available had factory option kits that allowed you to take the road cars 1.8BDA engine up to 450bhp. Rally models went higher, not to mention the infamous 1400bhp pikes peak car. Only a handful of the cars left the factory at 450bhp (most opted for the "modest" 350bhp kit) giving 250bhp/litre.

If you're talking about the highest power/litre road car, then there are several supra's and skylines knocking about with in excess of 450bhp/litre. Whether they're road legal is a grey area though, as they can't get through emissions testing with that kind of power.

Highest specific output of a piston engine goes to Renault's 1.5 litre Turbo used in the 1986 F1 season. In qualifying trim, power could be boosted all the way to 1,500bhp, giving amagical 1,000bhp/litre, although in the races, they ran at around 800bhp (a "mere" 533bhp/litre).

There have been many road vehicles over the years with mad power to weight ratios and mad horsepower per litre ratios,

It is easy to get 350bhp+ from a 1,300cc motorcycle engine.

Boss Hoss produce a motorcycle with a supercharged 8.2 litre Chevrolet V8, which is good for around 1,000bhp - and it's road legal.

Several people have put Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engines into road legal cars. All 27,000cc and 1,400bhp of them.

Road legal de-tuned track cars with power outputs of over 300bhp per litre are not unknown.

There are plenty of nutters out there who've managed to squeeze 500-600bhp from a 2 litre turbo Impreza or Evo, and a 2.8 litre Skyline can go to about 900bhp with serious mods.
It's perfectly legal, but whether you'd want to drive such a highly tuned beast on the road is a different matter.

BHP or Brake Horse Power is a measurement of power. In simple terms it is used to measure the power your engine will apply to your wheels to make them turn. BUT, that is only 1 aspect of performance. For example, 150 BHP is fantastic in a motorcycle but utterly useless in a truck. And vice versa, a truck engine may produce 100's of BHP but it won't break any speed records.

there is no limit that I have seen,
some people take the W V 12 that was designed for 1000 HP and trick it out to get more than that.
so, I guess my question is road legal in what country or state ?
are you looking for something custom
or something you can go out and buy new ?

the big trick to high HP/liter is turbo charging
the next big trick is high RPM

Is that the Shelby Ultimate Aero TT ?

Its just clocked up the fastest time for any road legal car and finally beaten the Veyron.

Back in the thirties there was a car called The Flageolet, or something similar, that had a 35 litre engine, yes thiry-five litre, I had a picture of it somewhere, very very long bonnet!

I cant find anything about it on the net, but its in my car encyclopedia, I doubt if there are any examples left now!

Non turbo? I think it's the Honda S2000 which makes 120 HP /litre.
( 2.2 L engine 240HP )

Turbo, I'm not sure. It's probably some limited production car like a Ford Escort Cosworth RS.
