I commend you for remembering!
First year anniversary is the Paper anniversary. There are tons of cool ways to give a paper gift.
Check this site. It has all the info you need and some good ideas: http://marriage.about.com/cs/anniversaries/a/wedannivideas.htm

EDIT: I disagree with those who say the anniversary is "all about her". This is all about THE TWO OF YOU. Celebrate your togetherness.

Well...you may already know this...but, your first wedding anniversary is traditionally commemorated with a paper gift.

At first you may be saying...paper....how cheap. What can I get her that's paper that will be special or meaningful. Here are a few ideas to fit different budgets:

Create a collage or a scrapbook with favorite photos of the two of you. You can start off when you were each babies before you knew each other, then through childhood and on to your adulthood when you met and up to the present. It's kind of like a chronological story of your lives first running parallel, and now together. This can be done on a large poster board, canvas or in a photo album or scrapbook.

You can create a menu on really special paper featuring some of her favorite foods and then prepare (or have catered) a wonderful gourmet dinner for her. As a sentimental side gift you could obtain the menu from the first restaurant you two ever visited.

You could purchase, or make, a bouquet of paper roses (or whatever her favorite flower is) and put them in a special vase to serve as a constant reminder of the occasion.

Nice, but a little overdone, are things like certificates and homemade cards.

Whatever you do...just remember...Love is an Action...so make it a thoughtful one.

Good Luck!
The Coach

If you live on a coastal community set up a dinner on the beach. You can have candles (Get the electric kind, they won't blow out!) Flowers and you can always get a nice restaurant to prepare the dinner for you. Make sure you have a nice wine with Crystal Glasses or champagne.

Then get one of your friends to play waiter (Perhaps you can get a married male friend to do this for you if you agree to do this for him too!) and put the food on nice plates and then take them away when you are done. Time your meal to coincide with sunset. Then after dinner (Do Not forget a great chocolate dessert!) the two of you can watch the sunset. Make sure you set a nice table and perhaps have your friend bring out the present with the dessert. (If the dinner is all you can afford, I am sure that will do). You can always borrow china from your Mom or one of your wife's friends. To top the evening off you could have your friend draw a hot bath at your home and spread rose petals in it. Candles all around the bathroom and bedroom and a single rose on the bed! Pick out some romantic music and make a play list on your I-Pod. Turn it on before you leave so you will have music as well.

If this does not make her happy I would be very surprised.

If you do not live near the coast a rooftop will do or a balcony!

There are some place settings and some more ideas below.

Traditionally, the first anniversary is the Paper anniversary.

Get her some personalized stationery with her married name. You could also make some.

The modern first anniversary gift is a clock. You can get her a nice watch (think diamonds or cz's) or an "anniversary clock" which only needs to be wound once a year. They are in a glass dome with spinning weights at the bottom.

Of course...jewelry is always nice. Girls like to get gifts they can brag about to their friends.

matching tattoos :)

Since you're both still young, might as well take her some place fun, like an amusement park or something. (if you're into that kind of thing) then years from now when you're both old and wrinkley, and sitting home drinking pea soup for your 1000th anniversary, you can think back about the amazing time you had on your first anniversary.

Speaking as a woman myself. Diamonds are a girls best friend. But if you are looking for something more romantic a candle lit dinner that you prepared and a CD of romantic songs you burned yourself playing in the background might be a good idea.

give her a single red rose, along with a braclet with a single charm that represents something special to both of you. take her to a place where you can dance with her alone, in the sunset or under the stars..and in the end, remind her that youwill always lover her, even when you're both old and gray

Give her something special, like a fancy necklace. But just before that, cook a pretty fancy dinner with wine if she's getting home late.
