Aren't our modern day Superheros vigilantes, e.g. Batman, Superman, and Spiderman.

Oviously, vigilantism is undesireable in a society based on the rule of law. Of course, when laws are irrational or simply go willfully unenforced, the impetus for such behavior is increased.

One could also look at the vigilante as engaging in something akin to 'civil disobedience' - if he is willing to pay the penalty for his actions, that is.

The continuity of many super hero stories often includes some official sanction or some passing note to thier acting as concerned citizens rather than vigilantes. For instance, if you aprehend a criminal in the commision of a crime, and promptly turn him over to the police, you may not be judged a vigilante. Others, like The Punisher, or course, certainly fit the vigilante description..

Yes they are. Is it bad, maybe not.

Vigilantes provide a service the police cannot or will not.

Is it a chaotic system sure, but so is driving on the freeway, sure there are rules but how many people actually follow those rules to the T. Very few.

Vigilantes provide satisfaction where it cannot otherwise be attained. The problem it cannot be control and therefore is sometimes dealt out unfairly.

Obviously some crimes are more heinous than others. So the question becomes when does vigilantism become a "crime" in itself.

No human can deal "justice" to another. The only thing that can be dealt is punishment. Someone who commits a crime may not think it is wrong.

The idea of vigilante justice sounds very tempting, but the possibility of getting the wrong person, innocent I mean, is very real, and think how guilty you'd feel if you found out you had killed an innocent person, and then you might yourself end up in jail for a very long time.
There were vigilante threats against the McMartin's and the Freedman's, and the charges against them were all disproven.

Big diff between fact and fiction. We have police to take care of these issues.
I know they are not as efficient as we would like for them to be, nevertheless, this is their responsibility not someone bent on getting revenge where he/she thinks justice has been missed.

What profit do we see if a well meaning individual gets locked up with rapists and murderers for trying to do what they think was just? None! The community loses twice.

Mess with one of my kids.

I'll try the conventional approach first and call the police.
If that doesn't work, I'll open up the top of your head with an axe. Does that make me a vigilante?

Don't like them.

As for the super heroes, no. They are the only ones able to defend against super villains. Also, a "vigilante" retaliates against people aka take vengeance, super heroes do not go after vengeance, they are attempting to thwart a coming attack against innocent people.

PS I know it is all a fantasy but wanted to answer anyway.

Vigilantes, may have the right ideas but the wrong solutions.

Honestly? I can't believe there aren't more of them. To me it's an absolute MIRACLE that OJ Simpson is still alive. I find it hard to believe that there isn't somebody out there willing to go to jail if it means being famous.

They're dangerous. But if someone caused harm to one of my children, I'd be the first to try to take 'em down.
