No, I'm not wealthy and I've traveled and lived in other countries and I was always minding my own business when, with just a whisper of an American accent, 'natives' would ask if I was American and then start insulting me about my country.

No matter how they try to justify it, It's called bigotry.

That's probably because the so called "real ones" are sitting in their Lazy Boy recliners in their underwear eating Cheetos drinking beer and watching WWE wrestling and don't have a clue as to what's really going on in the world & couldn't care less.
As far as respect, probably for the reason you gave, as well as there is no cohesive long term foreign policy, just knee jerk reaction to each crisis as it develops.

We don't get respect because of the 'ugly' American that thinks we are better than the rest of the world and that We are entitled go around telling everyone how to run their life and country. Many other countries have advancing human rights and technologies and all we know how to do is build weapons of mass destruction. i e Bush / Chaney

No, I think most people in other countries that hate Americans do so without ever meeting one. And if they did meet one, they didn't talk for more than 2 minutes.

my family and I have travelled to Eurpoe several times and we are welcomed for all the wonderful things Americans do to help other countries, so before you generalize that all American travelers deserve the title THE UGLY AMERICAN, go for a trip yourself, and see how YOU can better represent your country to improve its image.

No. Americans are welcomed almost everywhere. Don't confuse their hatred of Bush for a lack of respect for Americans.

I think they don't respect Americans because of the idiots that keep getting all over the media like Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears. They think all Americans are like that... that's why they think we're all stupid and have no respect for us.

True, also the media doesn't help either. Our president is a baboon, and most of America doesn't agree with what he's doing, yet we get judged by his actions. We elected him because we were lied to. Nothing we can do now except wait til he's out of office and hope he doesn't destroy the world in the meantime.

if they did, they'd respect us even less.
