I am beginning to learn to crochet, on making a granny square when I finish a round should I finish off or can I continue working the stitches if I want to make it bigger? I didn't want to make a lot of little ones, I just wanted to continue on that one square. I hope someone can answer my question.
Thanks,
Catherine

I've seen a single square successfully taken lap-robe size several times. I do 36" square for car-seat use.

Wool is more forgiving than acrylic. You can "block" wool to shape, but with acrylic "what you make is what you get".

If your "chains" are no looser or tighter than the rest of the stitches, the finished item should stretch flat. If the chains are *tighter*, there may be a tendency for the item to cup or bowl. The opposite problem is having the edge "flute" like a ruffle.

Sure you can, just continue in the pattern. On the corners, you make your 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet in the same space, thus turning the corner, and then do the 3 double crochet in each space around. If you wish to continue with the same color in the next round, you just join to the first stitch in the round, slip stitch to the corner, then chain 3, and do 2 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet in the corner.
It will make a large square, good for a lapghan or a baby blanket.

You can make the squares as big as you like and with as many colors as you like but if you use different colors, it will mean tying off each color to go to the next one. Since you are just learning, you might want to stick with one color for now, maybe make 6 larger squares and then sew them all together so you can learn the proper technique for that. Once you get them together, you can then crochet around the afghan 3 or 4 times and put some a finishing edge on to complete the look.

I never quite got the hang of putting all the squares together but do love the look that it gives when you have various colors to work with. I have one called a Tiffany Afghan where I crocheted a bunch of granny squares in various colors, then trimmed each square with a row of black. Then they were all sewn together and I trimmed the whole thing in several rows of black to hold it all together and give it a finished look (my cousin put the squares together for me :)

Have fun :)

You can make the square as large as you want. The only thing I can think of that is making you project curl is you are not putting in the added 2 double chains in each corner and rather than making a square you are making a circle and even with a circle you have to have the added double chains. Hope this helps. If not send on here for further information.

I've done that once and eventually the ends started warping up and not laying flat. I guess if you have extremely exact stitches it might look neat for longer. I got mine to about a foot across before I started noticing many problems though.

I've made entire afghans this way. Just keep going and going and going. You do need to pay attention to your gauge and make sure you use the same weight yarn, but other than that, you can do it very easily.

Of course you can keep going. then you wont have to sew them all together. i do it all the time. no patience to sew them afterwards.
