I'm currently 13 weeks pregnant after a 10 week miscarriage. Needless to say, I've been extremely nervous this pregnancy. Now that I am almost to the point where miscarriage is less likely, I'd like to know some reasons for miscarriages in the second trimester. I know it could be some of the same reasons as first trimester miscarriage, but it seems that there would be something more if it occured in the second trimester. Thanks!

2nd trimester miscarriages are uncommon, but when they do happen it's most likely due to pre-existing reproductive problems like structural abnormalties in the mother (i.e. incompetent cervix), a chronic illness or disease in the mother or an abnormality that develops with the pregnancy such as placentia abruptio.

Reasons For Second Trimester Miscarriage

Unfortunately, I don't think you find a reason most of the time without extensive investigation. Just like in the first trimester, it can just be one of those things. There is also such a thing as a missed miscarriage, where you don't know and continue to carry your baby until you spontaneously miscarry, or have a d&c. A lot of people then miscarry in the second trimester when the baby stopped growing in the first.

There are lots of reasons these things happen, but it doesn't make it any easier to take when it does. I am sorry for your recent loss and know nothing I can say will stop you from worrying, but your chances are very good from this point onwards to go on and have a healthy baby. I wish you the best.

I miscarried my first at 15 weeks gestation, and carried my second to 41 weeks, a beautiful birth, and a beautiful baby girl sleeping upstairs right now :)

Congratulations!!!!!

Primary causes in the second trimester are malformed placenta, blood clots behind the placenta, and infection. Failing cervix also is a cause.

Really, you can worry yourself sick. Look at the lists on the boards and from your doctor's office for things to avoid (these have been found to be the cause of some miscarriages), but that's about the best you can do.

I know we are told to stay away from certain foods during our pregnancies like certain fish, hot dogs, sushi, cold cuts we haven't re-heated. I believe the reason is that there are organisms that are in these foods that we as adults can fight off but fetuses can't. Maybe if we were to consume these foods it could cause a miscarriage if the baby was unable to fight off the organism.

Everyone prays through pregnancy. Anyhow Just be safe. Do not let anything that will hurt hit your tummy. Do not fall down on your tummy. Do not over heat yourself. Stay off your feet more then you think your should. Try not to change too much of what you did before the pregnancy.

Honestly, I don't think there's a definate answer to your question.

Babies often don't make it through the pregnancy for a variety of different reasons.

My brother's girlfriend carried her baby all the way up thru 5 months. She didn't smoke or drink, and she never did anything too streneous...hell, she quit her job cuz the smell was making her nautious...

Stop worrying & enjoy your pregnancy <3

Pray a lot, that's the best thing you can do for your baby!

Bad luck or an incompetent cervix.... or if you go into preterm labor.
