The quebecois have faced years and years of abuse from the english speaking part of the nation. Example... World War I conscription and Representation by Population. They just don't feel like they are really part of the nation because they are the minorities.

The lynch-pin is language, the root is proportion, and the history is ancient. With most of the country being English-speaking, that made the francophones very aware of their minority status. There has been a long-standing state of friction twixt England and France, dating back to medieval times. The situation exacerbated in the 60's when DeGaul came to Canada and stirred the political pot of seccessionist fervor. The Partie Quebecois seems to favor an isolationist, no-compromise, us-first approach to things, which will, in the long term, reduce them to a mere political irritant as opposed to a valid political force.
