i was brought up believing it meant Port Out Starboard Home, which was the sides of a cruise ship well off people would travel on leaving and returning to home port. although recently this is supposed to be a complete myth. as far as i can help im afraid.

Port Out Starboard Home. It was the sea-term for where the first class passengers luggage was kept on ocean going liners. (Easiest place to get to if they wanted anything and first off at arrival in port.) The luggage would be stamped POSH. Hence - posh.

P & O did the India run so Port out Starboad Home meant you got the cooler side each way ffor most of the trip
