There are no such thing as "native americans". Originally NOBODY lived in North America. It was until nomadic travelers from Asia crossed the Bering ice bridge into Alaska that mankind started populating North America thousands of years ago. Just because the ancestors of "native americans" happen to get here a few thousand years before our ancestors doesn't make them any more "native" than you or I. Anybody born here is a native.

The term Native American has evolved over the years. In the 19th century it was used to refer to the anti-imigrant movement of the time. The term was adopted by the decendents of the pre-Columbinan aboriginies in the 1960's. If you are looking to change it again, you are free to try.

About as much as I am.
Its funny how some phrases we use have no literal application. Like if I say that "I made turkey for thanksgiving." What did you invent turkeys? Are you the Lord?
Language can both be a bridge and a barrier depending on how much it is used and undertood.

Yes, anyone born here is a Native American. The term as some would use it to apply only to the aboriginals found here by our Euro ancestors is a lie.

"Native American" originally meant a person born in America, but no longer does; it now means what used to be called an "Indian", before that term was deemed offensive or no longer politically acceptable.

Unless you have Native American ancestors, you're not. My ancestors are from all over the world. I was born in America but not considered a native American.

You are an American native, I think that the other term was already taken. Would you call a caucasian man whose family originated in Johannesburg an African-American?
