6 1/2 = 12/2 + 1/2 = 13/2
1 1/3 = 3/3 + 1/3 = 4/3
common denominator = 2*3 = 6
6/3 = 2; 2*4 = 8
6/2 = 3; 3*13 = 39
(8+39)/6 = 47/6

Until you get really good at working with mixed fractions the best thing to do is make improper fractions.
6 1/2 would be 13/2 and 1 1/3 is 4/3.
The next step is to find a common denominator - in this case it is the two denominators (2 & 3) multiplied together (6).
Multiply the first fraction by 3/3 and you get 39/6.
Multiply the second by 2/2 and you get 8/6.
Now you can add the numerators 39+8 and you get 47.
47/6 - turn it back into a proper fraction 7 5/6.

convert 6 1/2 + 1 1/3 into improper fractions:
13/2 + 4/3, LCD = 2*3 = 6, or
13*3/2*3 + 4*2/3*2 =
39/6 + 8 /6 = 47/6.
Done.
