regular motor oil. 10-30 weight. don't overfill it. keep checking the dip stick. don't turn mower on its side to get to the drain plug. get someone to hold the handle DOWN so you can loosen the drain plug then put a shallow pan under the mower and finish taking out the drain plug. usually it's best to run the engine for a couple of minutes to get the oil hot before you drain it. most mowers don't even use one quart so be careful how much you put back in. keep checking the dipstick. use any quality motor oil.

Time to replace something. Cheapest choice is the oil if the lawn mower will still turn over. Next is to replace the lawn mower. More expensive is to replace the operator of the lawn mower with a professional yard maintenance company and then take the wife to dinner and keep her away from tools.

Yah your B&S lawn mower typically take a 30 weight. If you go to your local Home Depot or Lowe's there is a section near the lawn mowers that has small bottles of oil for lawn mowers. You can pick one up there.
Make sure you empty the oil that your current lawn mower has in it.

I once picked a snapper off the (trash) curb with a quart of mud dumped into the combustion chamber (probably from the spark plug hole) and a big chunk of aluminum block smashed off the side, so dirty oil is pretty tame compared with what can _really_ happen...was still worth $50 in scrap so who's complaining. Usually "not starting after an hour of working fine" means a carburetor fuel delivery issue; if the oil level is ok (not overfilled) then dirty oil shouldn't kill an engine unless it's "thick black sludge" type of dirty. An overfilled engine could cause frothing and seize the engine.

You can put regular SAE 30 Wt oil. For your typical lawn mower this is what they need.
