You're right, but it was Columbus' arrival that marked the permanent European colonization of the Americas, so Columbus gets the credit.

The Vikings did arrive earlier but their colony was abandoned, and there is evidence the Chinese arrived on the west coast around the same period, but again, nothing came of it.

Columbus gets credit because he was the first to make a meaningful impact (whether it was good or bad). He started the flow of colonists to the New World. There are evidence of Vikings and even Japanese colonies before Columbus but they didn't make lasting colonies. The fact is that Columbus thought that he was in the Indies and Amerigo was the first to realize that it was a new world is why it is named after him.

Christopher Columbus did not discover America, he discovered South America I believe. (I could be wrong, I've been out of school for a long time) And America is named after Amerigo Vespucci...supposedly he discovered it after Columbus came here or something like that.
