When you work 11:00pm to 7:00am or 12:00am to 8:00am ... why is it called the 'grave-yard' shift?

In days gone by quite often people were buried alive, it wasn't until the next person to be buried in that plot that they realised the first one had been buried alive. So for a long time after they began to discover that people had actually been buried alive. They used to tie string to deceased finger with a bell on the end on the top of the grave. Someone would sit in the cemetery all night on the " grave yard shift" listening for a bell or bells to ring, to say they have buried someone else alive. This is also where the saying " saved by the bell" comes from.

Well not really. See the grave yard shift usually means a night shift usually between the hours of 10 or 11pm until 6 or 7 am. I know because I work these hours. People who work in the cemetary usually work between 9am and 6pm. So those are regular hours. Your joke didn't work.

There's usually nobody else around, like a grave yard at night.

Because nothing much is happening and the people who are awake at that hour resemble zombies. Not their fault, it's difficult to adjust to those work hours and many people have difficulty sleeping in the daytime.

I loved working those hours. It's quiet and there is little distraction. You get peace of mind and get to see the sun rise. True mystical beauty every morning in Arizona.

because those are the hours when we really don't want to go around "grave-yards" so going to work those kind of hours are kinda scary

Because that is when most people sleep so it seems deathly quiet. I love working it . There is less work to be done but no one wants to work it so they pay me more. Less work; more pay : my kinda shift.
