3 multiplied by 5 is 15. If you had 5 groups of three m&m's each and counted them up, you would get 15. 3+3+3+3+3=15.

the answer is 15.
you take 5 and triple it:
11111
11111
11111
now add them up and you get fifteen.
or you can do it by 3 times five:
111
111
111
111
111
either way, you get fifteen.
