My landlord says that my AC unit is low on freon but the AC is working just fine and there looks like there is now freezing on the copper pipes in the unit. Am I getting lied to in order to keep down the electricity bill? Is there any way I can check for low freon? Thanks

All answers above are correct. The problem is if you had a manifold set would you know the correct pressures they can tell real problems and if it where low on charge you could not purchase the the refrigerant to charge the system due to the EPA laws have an A/c tech. check it. so you don't get yourself in trouble or get injured. And Have the freon police show up at you door. just kidding about the freon police ,wont happen

You cannot actually hook the gauges up and check the refrigerant unless you are epa certified. But, for a step by step troubleshooting guide check out the air conditioner page at my source. You will be able to tell if you have a problem or not.

If it is freezing up it is very likely to be low on freon.

If there is a frost pattern on the evap coils is it even or just in one spot.....If the whole evap gets cold your problem is with restricted air flow...
