It might just be a dead battery, or corroded cable. Or it's possible that the starter seloniod or starter is bad.
You can have the battery load tested at any parts place, along with the starter.
I would check the battery voltage it should be at least 12.7 -13.6 if the battery is charged. Also just cleaning the battery terminals might fix it. If not pull the starter off and have it tested.
Good Luck!

Most likely it's your battery. If you can get it jump started, take it to a parts store, (Autozone, Advance, Pepboys, O'Riley's yadda yadda). Tell them the problem. If they can, they'll test your old battery and if it's bad, install a new one. They can also test your alternator, which if bad, will drain your battery. It may not cause you to have to buy a new battery also, but it is possible.

A quick experiment will point you in the right direction. If you get it started, let it run where it is with the headlights or some accessory on. If your car dies after 15-20 mins. or so, your alternator is the problem. If the car continues to run, then your battery is the dirty bugger.

I doubt its your starter, you didn't mention a "funny" noise. When they go out, they sometimes make a deep whining sound. Or a clicking or grinding noise.

This would be a good time to let your son learn some automechnic lessons. Good luck.

You may wanna try a new battery..it also could be your starter.First see if your lights go on bright if they do then turn the radio on and all other things you can turn on without starting the car..just turn key..then look at the lights if they are real low then its ur alternator...which if its bad it will drain your battery.

does the starter motor crank? (you'll hear a grinding/clicking sound) if so, then the problem may be a fuel pump.

if not, then replace the battery, or at least try jumpstarting it, since your engine is liekly not getting enough electrical power.

if neither of those helps, I'd check with a local mechanic, but its likely gonna be something that more expensive than its worth.

It could be the alternator.

If you can, go buy a new car.
If you can't, find someone in your circle of friends whose Dad is a mechanic. If you have the money, forget everything I said and just go get it fixed by anyone.

If you notice the lights dimming significantly when you try to start, the problem is the starter. The starter is pulling to many amps.
