I live in one of the most beautiful rural towns, high up in the Drakensberg mountain range of the Mpumalanga Province, in Sunny South Africa - Lydenburg. Lydenburg is in fact a prayer-name commemorating the pioneer (Voortrekkers) Boers who settled some 50km's north of Lydenburg, on lower lying areas, at Ohrigstad, and died of malaria fever. Mpumalanga is a Pedi (one of the vernacular languages spoken locally) word meaning: "The place where the sun is first seen" as this is the most eastern of the RSA's nine provinces.
I was born near Johannesburg - the capitol city of the Gauteng (gold) province - some 300km's from here . . .
Lydenburg is well-known as a tourist destination, for its pure mountain air, panoramic vistas and pristine mountain streams, as well as an abundance of indigenous fauna and flora - some quite unque in the world, like our own mountain dwarf orchids, found only here, the endangered blue swallows, nearly extinct taita falcons, and scarse Cape vultures. The area is surrounded by the richest chrome and platinum ore reserves in the world, and produce some 90% of the world's raw chrome and platinum, so its now rapidly expanding and loosing some of its original rural character, although the wealth of progress is not totally unacceptable to the local people.

I was born in a small part of rural Ireland, and live in Dublin now. I moved about 80 or 90 miles, so not very far!

Right now, I live within a few miles of where I was born.....although the hospital where I was born no longer exists. I have lived in the Cambridge area for all but one year of my life.
