it depends on which component you're talking about. you want your CPU to stay below 60° C. your GPU (or Graphics Processing Unit) is designed to run hotter than CPU's, so they're generally okay to run as high as 100° C, but lower is always better. different makes and models have different operating ranges, so check with your manufacturer for the specifics regarding your particular parts. your motherboard temps should also be kept below the 60° C mark. download a program called Everest Ultimate to monitor all your system temps. it will give your separate temp readouts for all critical parts of your system.

If you are running an Intel chip, the first post would be accurate. However if you are running an AMD chip your results should be a bit higher. 35-40 is the range to shoot for, but AMD chips run much hotter than Intel, and therefore take alot to keep them in that range. If you run a higher end fan (Like a Zalman 9500/9700CP) you should be able to stay in that range. I run about 37-45 degrees depending on how heavy a load I'm running with the Zalman fan on. All of these figures are for CPU temp only. There are also temp ratings for other components as well, so keep that in mind. Everest is a good program for monitoring system temps if you want to run that.
