Malcolm Wells is an architect that used to design underground houses. Not like LOTR, but his books would be a good source of info.

I guess he is retired. The website says he no longer provides his architectural services. He is about 80. But I saw him speak in the early 1990's. He's interesting. Very funny.

if you want to build a real home underground, do some research on earth homes. you have some challenges to deal with, particularly handling the variety of moisture content you'll get over time with the dirt that will be up against whatever materials you choose. there are some methods and materials you can pick to make the impact of the moisture not cause a lot of problems with mold and dampness and airquality, without spending a fortune on dehumidifiers etc.

I don't know if this is your fantasy or not? Hobbits live underground, people do not and, this is in a world of make believe.

In the first place, you have to have the county approve of this, all your plans for an underground home. It would have to be virtually waterproof and have the ability to repel water when you have problems like heavy rains or you'll be floating.

Your going to have insect problems, where do insects live, why, underground of course so, you'll have problems with them.

You'll have to find a way to get electric and water to your new underground home. The wiring will be all underground cable service and probably expensive, all the water system will have to have special ways to get at it in case of problems.

When I think about it, you know. I wouldn't want anything to do with this set-up. I see a lot of disastrous results ahead. I'm sorry.

There are "berm" homes and we have built them but, they're about half way underground. They're warm, safe and snug, think about it. They have access to all the above mentioned things.
