The nerves to the lower extremities start form the spinal cord and slide through narrow openings through the sides of the lumbar spine.
Age, weight and cronic arthritic conditions narrow these small openings. My advise to your husband is to see a Neurologist or Neurosurgeon asap. The longer numbness is prevalent permanency will result.

This problem originates from his spine. There has been some damage done to the nerves that control the circulation to his legs, the sciatic nerve is the likely culprit. There does not have to have been any serious injury; sudden twisting or stretching of the spine can do it. He must loose weight or the problem will get worse

Three possibilities: Poor circulation (have him checked out with a physical), he's just too pooped due to his overweight, he can't get enough oxygen to his limbs, or he just doesn't want to go expend the energy and do what is best for his health and this is his excuse to avoid what he knows you want to do for him.

See a Doctor right away if this continues to be a problem, esp. if over 40. He needs to get on a diet, but first get a check up.
