The air in my flat gets very dry when i turn on the central heating. any suggestions for how i can counteract this? I have bought an air humidifier but it doesn't stop the problem during the night.

just to add that it's freezing here already and it's not even winter yet. I have a young son and it's just too cold to turn of the heating at night or open a window.
Thanks for all your replies so far.

Put bowls of water under the rads, its cheaper than bying humidifiers!
Putting wet things on the rads will not help the running of the rads...or the cost!

Do'nt have your heating on overnight! Keep warm in bed and save money and the problem! Hang those ceramic humidifiers filled with water on the rads(i think Kleeneze/betterwear sell them) or your local hardware stores.

The regular heating would not extremely dry it out. No house is easily air tight although noticeably in case you, like maximum persons, from time to time open outdoors doors. the outdoors air is drier interior the wintry climate and thus makes the indoor air drier to boot.

Central heaters that are all electric will dry out the air.....nothing you can do other than get another or bigger humidifier to run at night.

Put a wet towel over the radiator, this moistens the air.

Boil some water on the stove... make sure it doesn't boil dry though. As the water boils the steam should moisten the air.

Put a dish of water on top of the radiator, my grandad used to do it and it worked pretty well.
