You need a common denominator. Right now you have 8, 12, and 3. The LCD is 24.
1/8 = (1*3) / (8*3) = 3 / 24
5/12 = (5*2) / (12*2) = 10 / 24
2/3 = (2*8) / (3*8) = 16 / 24
So, add the fractions...
3/24 + 10/24 + 16/24
= (3+10+16) / 24
= 29 / 24
= 1 5/24
Now, add in the whole numbers.
1 5/24 + 4 + 5 + 3
= 13 5/24

Rule is To add or subtract two compound fractions, convert the fractions to simple fractions and follow the steps you use to add or subtract two simple fractions
4 1/8 + 5 5/12 + 3 2/3 = 4 + 1/8 + 5 + 5/12 + 3 + 2/3
We need to find the common denominator. The common denominator is 24.
4 + 1/8 x 3/3 + 5 + 5/12 x 2/2 + 3 + 2/3 x 8/8 =
4 + 3/24 + 5 + 10/24 + 3 + 16/24 =
Add the whole number (4+5+3) and Add the fractions (3/24 + 10/24 + 16/24)
12 + 29/24 =
ANSWER: 12 29/24

first add 4, 5, and 3. You get 12. Now you have to add the fractions. you have to find the least common multiple of the denominators, which is 24. So the fractions are equal to 3/24, 10/24, and 16/24, add those and you get 29/24 which is 1 5/24 so the answer is 13 5/24

okay, first, convert the fractions so theyre easier to add up. find the least common multiple of 8, 2, and 3 which is 24. then find out how many times those numbers will go into 24, and multiply the numbers above those by that number [the multiple] then just add them all up together and you have your answer.
