This is actually a two part question. In the scene where the husband and wife are in the basement with their two friends and they find that other room behind the wall, the man sees his reflection. Was that his own reflection or was he really the killer from the previous owners of the house? The next part of my question is what was actually in that other room? When the women is posessed she said, "at the bottom of the well is the gateway to hell"? Was that literally a well that led somewhere or just a place where these ritual killings took place? I kind of took it as there was a well that led somewhere.

I believe George was seeing Ronnie's (the killer) image or spector, but it's never really made clear to us.
The lady was not "possessed" she was a psychic. I don't think the well led anywhere literally. The premise is based on a belief that there are places where demons can pass through from hell to our world.
Of course, I have no way of knowing whether that is true or not. I have seen some things, but I've never encountered a demon. By the grace of God, I never will, either!
Wasn't that just the scariest movie ever? The fact that it was supposedly based on fact only made it more so! I always wished I could travel to Long Island and see that house, from a safe distance! Morbid curiosity, I guess.
I have sometimes wondered what ever became of that family, and if they ever managed to have a normal life after that.

As for the reflection deal....many people had said that George Lutz looked a bit like Ronald Defeo...so I guess that is what they were going for with that scene. As for the pit....yes that was suppose to be some "gateway' to evil. But you do know that the whole deal was made up by the Lutzs and their attorney to make money!! Many families have lived in the same house and have made NO reports of strange things happening. The acutal room you are talking about with door was some sort of storage room...nothing evil!!

I took it that George saw the killer.
The room was a storage area where the DeFeo kids kept their toys.
Hollywood made it into a more scarier place to make the storyline intense.

I took it as that he could BECOME a killer.

As to the second, I felt that the killings opened a door to hell
