Can they not be paralyzed from the waist down or die from being shot or stabbed in the stomach? I only ask for research on a story I'm writing.

Sure, if the bullet doesn't pass through the spinal canal.

Most people who are shot or stabbed in the abdomen are not paralyzed. Paralysis from the waist down (or neck down or whatever else) only occurs when the spinal cord is injured. MOST penetrating wounds to the stomach do not do this but a FEW do!

Most people who get shot or stabbed in the abdomen need a quick trip to the operating room to see if there are any holes in the intestines or other organs. If there are holes in the intestines or stomach, the surgeon needs to patch them in order to keep the contents from spilling into the abdomen and causing life threatening infection.

Best of luck with the story!
