Do you hog up the entire lane on your side by staying in the middle so cars behind you can't pass?

Or do you move as close to the yellow solid line for cars behind you to pass?

I'm just asking to see if doing the latter will cause cars to slam you on the side by accident.

Staying in your lane is not "hogging". It is what you would have been taught in drivers ed. If you encourage cars to sneak around on your right where there is not a go around lane, you are inviting trouble. The shoulder will develop potholes that can cause a driver to lose control.

This question being in the Motorcycle section, I am assuming that you are asking what to do on a motorcycle.. If that is the case and there is any traffic at all, when there is no left turn lane for you to get in.. If you want to live to ride another day, just keep going until you can find a good place to pull off to the right, then make a U turn when there is no traffic, and go back so you can make a right turn onto the road you want to use.. A bike sitting still in the middle of a 2 lane highway is nothing but a (hey officer I didn't see him) Sitting Target for the cagers. I been riding 30 years and are still here to give this advice.

As with your car, you stay within your lane. You also stay to the left of the lane, as this is what is called "proper positioning". People need to be careful about "it's against the law" stements, as we all live in different places with different laws. I am very against passing a person about to make a left turn, but it is allowed in some places. Being aware of this, and the fact that most drivers will do it wether it is legal or not, I position myself to MY best advantage. Often times this means that I am at risk, but I am at less risk.

Stopped or not NEVER allow a car to share your lane. Stay center and block them....it is illegal to share a lane with a motorcycle for any car and this includes ANY single lane road, turning or not...period. I find that I stay slightly right of center when I an in single lanes to avoid exactly that type of behavior from autos. It blocks that sneak around...I have been hit by those drivers who are in "too much of a hurry" and not paying attention....so now I intentionally block them.....not out of any personal retribution but for my own safety and the law. They have the curb to hit or me and the choice has always been neither since I moved right center. That way it removes the idiotic "I can squeeze through there....I think?" person out of the equation

If there is a solid while line along the edge of the right side of the road, the fog line, they are not supposed to pass you, against the law. They could be ticketed for improper lane usage. So, make sure that you turn on your turn signal in plenty of time to let them know that you are going to turn at the intersection, stop, wait for the traffic and make your turn. You don't have to scoot over, just sit there and make your turn when it is safe to do so. If they want to pass, it is up to them to do it safely. If they slam into your side, they are at fault, not you.

I'm one of the "block your lane" people for all the great reasons already mentioned. Just wanted to add one thing...especially on a country road...When stopped be very vigilant of the people coming up behind you and be ready at all times to take evasive action. I've never had to, but have heard plenty of stories to the contrary.

I get closer to the yellow line, and if there is no oncoming traffic and there's people behind me, I hop into the oncoming lane before slowing down.

If the road is one lane each direction, you should stay in the lane and not try to get closer to the center line. Cars will just have to wait until you can make your turn safely before they can proceed.
