I find learning online a cheap and great way to do it, they do have the complete idiot's guide to c++ (not as an insult just a good instructional series) so that might be helpful

You definately want to start simple with QBasic or VBasic to learn the basics of programming, and then move on to C (I reccomend a dev-c++ compiler)

Learning a few website languages on sites like w3schools.com can also be helpful because languages like PHP are very similiar to other programing languages.

Hey! Welcome to programming, hope you like it!

Consider these books
Game Programming: The L Line, The Express Line to Learning
How to Think Like a Computer Scientist: Learning with Python
Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner
All three of these will help build a foundation that you can both use to make things with Python and eventually move on to other programming languages.

Avoid "Game Programming with Python, Lua, and Ruby" by Tom Gutschmidt. It's too vague and only suggests what you CAN do without telling you HOW to actually do it.

If you have a large enough library system in your city, I'd recommend finding all these books there first, page through them over a weekend. Then you can decide which one suits you better. (People have different learning styles, don't let someone try to tell you that one text is the ONLY way to learn something.) Once you know which book you like best, then you buy a copy for yourself.

Best of luck

First of all, you have to know that C++ and C# are the most powerfull and popular languages in Game developing section.
As a software developer, I do not recommend you to start with VB or QBasic and so on..
You can start with C++, I know it will be a bit harder, but you will learn the concepts very well.
If you start with VB or QBasic, later on C++ will come very weired and difficult for you to learn, but after learning C++, you can learn VB in 1 week, yes only 1 week.

Well, O'reilly publishes the most accurate books, but they're not always entertaining. "For Dummies" usually is pretty decent I have C++ complete or something like that and it calls itself 9 books in 1, it's less dry, but I prefer the dry books really. I like C++ and OpenGL personally and I think you may want to find a copy of "How not to program in C++" it's very funny, and very helpful at helping upgrade your skills.

Try CBT Nuggets for video's!

I don't know about Python, but they do teach VB & C.

There's some great free starter stuff & more if you want to pay. You do have to create a login with them though....naturally!

Dude, learn BASIC, it is a nice start for a young programmer. Go to www.justbasic.com, there is a free download, and a nice and easy tutorial. If you need help, ask me.
